trossdunksmallMaryland commit Terrence Ross has kept a low public profile this summer, appearing only at the I-95 Elite Challenge and the Terps’ elite camp this weekend.  His absence on the AAU circuit hasn’t hindered his progress, though, as he’s been playing much better competition just a short drive from home.

NOTE: This is but a small sample of InsideMDSports.com's coverage of Maryland's Elite Camp, and another example of why InsideMDSports.com is the No. 1 news outlet in thw world for Terps coverage. Ross is a frequent participant in pick-up games at Maryland, playing against current Terps, members of the Washington Wizards and former Montrose Christian star and current NBA standout Kevin Durant.

“It’s helped me,” Ross said Sunday after the elite camp.  “I can already tell it’s helped me a lot because my confidence has gone up since I’ve been playing with the NBA players.  I come back picking up all the little stuff that these kids don’t do.  It’s helped me a lot.”

That showed this weekend, as Ross was easily the best player in attendance.  He was on top of his game last night, hitting seven three-pointers and scoring 31 points against other top recruits and Maryland players.

This morning he continued his hot shooting, helping lead his team to a championship in a round-robin tournament of 3-minute overtime simulation games.  He relished the chance to show his future coaches his skills as they evaluate at what position he’s best suited.

“It was even better that I had a really good two days,” he said.  “I think they really know what I can do now.”

Ross said the coaches envision him as a shooting guard/small forward combo, positions that would showcase his full skill set.  He has an excellent outside shot and his athleticism and size make him dangerous off the wing and a tough defender on the other end.  He can drive to the basket but feels his handle could use some tightening.

“I still need some work on my ball-handling skills,” he said.  “I can control the ball a lot better but I’m still looking on improving that a lot.”

The summer will remain low-key for Ross, who was invited to next week’s top-100 camp but forgot to fill out the paperwork, he said.  He doesn’t plan on attending any other events and instead will continue to train at Montrose Christian and play pick up at Maryland.

His other focus is luring a couple of Maryland’s top 2010 recruits still on the board.  Ross has been connected to Portland (Ore.) Jefferson forward Terrence Jones, a former teammate of Ross’ at the school.

“I actually haven’t talked to him in awhile,” Ross said.  “I think he’s interested in coming but I got to check up with him and see what he’s thinking.”

Ross is also adamant about adding Charlottesville (Va.) Miller School’s Mychal Parker to the fold.  Parker attended the Saturday session of Maryland’s elite camp and the two went through drills in the same group. They also teamed up for D.C. at the I-95 Elite Challenge.

“I want him to play here so bad,” Ross said.  “I think we’ll win the championship honestly.

“He’s a great player.  I love playing with him.  I mean we can get each other going--if I’m not on then it’s Mike.  He can get to the basket, he can shoot the three, he can do whatever.   It’s just fun playing with him, I love playing with him.”

Ross isn’t exactly sure what Maryland’s chances are with Parker, but after talking to each other last night Ross is optimistic.

“I hope he comes to Maryland, I really do,” he said.  “Actually last night he hit me up and said, ‘Oh, I’m thinking I saw I really want to come here now.  I really like playing with you.’”

Parker shared Ross’ sentiments on playing together.

“I like playing with Terrence, he’s a ballplayer,” he said by phone this afternoon.  “I like the way he shoots the ball, he’s really unselfish.  I like that.”

Parker also confirmed his high interest in the Terps.

“They really are at the top of my list, they’re really number one really,” he said.  “I’ll make my list in the middle of July but Maryland is in good position now.”

His decision might not come for awhile, but the elite camp certainly didn’t hurt the Terps’ chances of adding Parker alongside Ross.

“The staff was really, really, really, really good,” he said.  “I really enjoyed myself there—coach [Chuck] Driesell, coach [Gary] Williams and coach [Keith] Booth did a really good job.”
